Poverty
October 15, 2008
Poverty is a worldwide issue that may never been resolved. As a lifelong resident of the urban environment, I have seen urban poverty my whole life. Though it is not outright abjectness in that the poor have nothing at all, their condition can be improved. There is only so much that can be donated for the poor, in the city, the middle class cannot really afford to spare so much. I propose an idea that can be applied to urban areas surrounding schools which could help ameliorate urban hunger.
Last year I ate at the cafeteria here at JHU almost everyday. It was an all-you-can-eat ordeal and there was much variety of foods to choose from. What I noticed is that a lot of food was not being eaten, it was taken and then thrown out. I thought about how much can be salvaged, probably tons. If there was a way schools can have a food salvage program, which would directly help the poor residents of the city. Though the food is not in the best condition, it is better than being hungry. Schools should implement this idea in order to combat urban hunger.
